My practice involves providing advice and appearing in courts and tribunals. I specialise in tax, commercial and corporate matters. That said, rarely are cases or issues confined to one area of law. Because of my experience, I am able to assist with a range of matters.
What differentiates me from many barristers, is the breadth of my experience, which includes working in the in-house tax team of a global multinational (BHP), in a big four accounting firm (PwC) and top tier law firms (Clayton Utz and MinterEllison). Most recently, I completed a detailed analysis of Australia’s tax treaties, on an “article by article” basis, as part of the IBFD Global Tax Treaty Commentaries, with Professor Miranda Stewart. This has given me deep insight into treaty policy and practice, both in Australia and more broadly. I regularly participate in tax policy consultation.
I hold a Master of Laws from the University of Melbourne, and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) and a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Queensland. I am a member of the Taxation Committee of the Law Council of Australia, a member of the Taxation Institute of Australia, a member of the International Fiscal Association and a Chartered Tax Adviser. I am also a Nationally Accredited Mediator and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD).
Over the years, I have been briefed by large firms, the Australian Government, Non-Governmental Organisations, multinational entities, medium and small firms, as well as individuals, and have an appreciation of their expectations and requirements.
I have been told that I have an ability to approach issues from a different perspective, to provide greater insight and a better outcome.
